The Power of Taking Five Minutes

22nd September 2026 By Eileen Wellings

Life can be busy. There is always another job to do, another message to answer or somewhere we need to be. Sometimes we become so used to rushing from one thing to the next that we forget what it feels like simply to stop.

Taking five minutes for yourself might not sound like much, but it can make a surprising difference.

Give Yourself Permission to Pause

You do not need to wait until you have an hour to spare or until everything on your list is finished. That moment may never come! Instead, find five minutes during the day when you can sit quietly, put down your phone and allow yourself to do absolutely nothing. Notice your breathing. Relax your shoulders. Let your thoughts come and go without feeling that you have to do anything about them.

A Simple Reset

If you are feeling particularly busy or overwhelmed, try taking a few slow, comfortable breaths.

As you breathe in, imagine yourself becoming calmer. As you breathe out, allow some of the tension you have been carrying to ease away. You are not trying to empty your mind or achieve a particular state. You are simply giving yourself a little space.

Small Changes Matter

We often think that improving our wellbeing requires making big changes. In reality, small things that we do regularly can be just as valuable. Five quiet minutes, a short walk, turning your phone off for a while or simply sitting with a cup of tea can all provide a welcome break in a busy day. And sometimes five minutes is all we need to return to whatever comes next feeling just a little calmer and clearer.

Closing Thought

Hypnotherapy also makes use of our ability to relax, focus and give our minds some space. If you feel you have forgotten how to switch off, learning to relax again can be a very good place to start.
